Texas SB 2807 & California DMV AV Rulemaking
In Force

State-level permitting frameworks specific to autonomous vehicle operation, confirmed in force and distinct from existing state AI-transparency statutes. At the federal level, NHTSA withdrew its AV STEP proposed rule on 26 June 2026, citing overly burdensome requirements for a voluntary program; the agency is pursuing its automated-vehicle safety goals through existing exemption and crash-reporting programs instead.

  • State permitting: operational requirements for deploying autonomous vehicles within each state's jurisdiction.
  • California DMV, new regulations: lifted the prohibition on autonomous vehicles over 10,001 lbs GVWR, opening the state to autonomous freight trucking, and authorized medium-duty autonomous transit vehicles up to 14,001 lbs GVWR for public entities and universities, alongside new noncompliance-notice, geofencing and first-responder-interaction requirements.
